Reflexion - Blue Zones
Reflexion - Blue Zones
Have you ever thought about what contributes to a person living to one hundred years of age?
Studies in the Blue Zones holds some information giving clues to this.
The Blue Zones refer to regions in the world (Sardinia Italy, Ikaria Greece, Nicoya Costa Rica, Loma Linda California and Okinawa Japan) with the highest ratio of centenarians and healthiest long living people.
A Danish twin study established that 20% of lifespan is determined by genes. I found this statistic encouraging because it highlights how much we can contribute to healthy habits that lead to longevity. Dan Buettner has studied this topic and highlights nine major habits that contribute to healthy living and longevity.
These habits include:
Moving naturally
Having a sense of purpose
Eat only until you are 80% full
A diet predominately plant based
Enjoy a wine at 5
Belonging to a faith based community
Families come first
Having close social connections
Be a part of a social group that supports healthy behaviours.
